That's Right! The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is a powerful federal law that was designed to protect you from inaccurate information in your credit reports and to keep your information private.

The accuracy of your credit information has never been more important than it is today. It can determine whether you qualify for a loan and at what interest rate, what rate you pay for insurance, whether you can rent a home or apartment and whether you get a job!

What Are Your Rights?

The following is a list of your rights under the FCRA:
The Right to Know What's There!

You have the right to know what is in your file
and may request the files of a consumer
       reporting agency.

The Right to Fix It!

You have the right to dispute incomplete or
inaccurate information in your file. Once you
do, the consumer reporting agency must
investigate unless your dispute is frivolous.
        Inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable
information must be removed or corrected,
usually within 30 days. In most cases, a
consumer reporting agency may not report
negative information that is more than seven years old, or bankruptcies that are more than
10 years old. However, a consumer reporting agency may continue to report information it
        has verified as accurate.

The Right to Be Informed If Used Against You!

If someone uses your credit report to deny your application for credit, insurance, employment,
etc. they must tell you and give you information on the agency that provided the information.

The Right to Privacy!

A consumer reporting agency may provide information about you only to people with
a valid need or to whom you have given permission. This is usually after you have
made an application with a creditor, insurer, employer, landlord, or other business.

What Action Can You Take?

If a consumer reporting agency, a user of consumer reports or a furnisher of information to a consumer reporting agency violates the FCRA, they may be liable for your actual damages, including emotional suffering (or up to $1000), plus punitive damages and reasonable attorney's fees and costs. You can also get your credit reports cleared up once and for all!
